The Mendocino Quilt Artists Guild is a small group of art quilters who live in Ukiah, in the surrounding towns and in the Anderson Valley, in northern California. We are doctors, therapists, nurses, teachers, moms, fulltime artists and farmers. We have been meeting for twice a month for over 10 years and have seen enormous changes in our art and in our small quilt community. We have a yearly retreat on the Mendocino coast which has grown from 2-1/2 days to 4 days. For the past three years we have focused on creating quilts for the Ultimate Guild Challenge at the AQS show in Nashville, Tennessee in late summer. Our projects from the retreat are, Show Your Attitude which won 2nd place in 2002, A Girl and Her Book which won 1st place in 2003, and Shall We Dance which won Best of Show in 2004. Our group made quilts for the Ukiah performance of Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues, which were featured on the HBO documentary, Stop the Violence, and will be a special exhibit at Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara in October 2004. We have a summer retreat in the coastal mountains near Philo, where the emphasis is on food, swimming, food, wine, fun and sometimes small individual projects, like the vagina quilt project.. We share our quilts, our techniques, our fabric, our tools, and freely of ourselves. We come to the group for support and encouragement, for laughs and friendship, and for discriminating advice on everything from design and composition to recipes, and gardening tips.
